23andMe — My DNA test results

I’ll admit: This post is incredibly delayed.

I actually purchased the 23andMe DNA test a couple of years back and shared a snap on Instagram stories (via my original account @serenajae). You may or may not know this about me, but I was adopted from South Korea when I was about six months of age. Several of you were curious about my DNA test results and previously messaged to see if I would be open to sharing them. I absolutely was, but never made it a priority.

So, here I am and this is it. Better late than never!

A terrible iPhone 6 photo that I rummaged around Dropbox for — circa July 12, 2017.

The results were a treat to receive and I love that 23andMe occasionally adds new things to their reports. For me, this was the first step I’d ever taken to officially look into my own heritage.

General notes:

  1. The test was super simple to use. Just spit into a tube and ship it off!

  2. I’d say that the majority of the traits shown were spot on. The exceptions were my ring finger length (it’s not longer) and I do have a small arch when it comes to my feet (not flat footed). I would also choose sweet over salty any day of the week.

  3. All of the wellness predictions were correct and the health reports (not shown since I would rather keep that full report personal) were an interesting read.

  4. There is a neat tab where you can explore your genetic connections (other people who have taken the test and share DNA).

Regarding #4: Earlier this year, I was connected with someone who shared a very small percentage of DNA with me (estimated 3rd cousin). I’m a pretty open book when it comes to my life story and adoption, so it was a thrill to chat and learn about hers. I’ve never opened up about things very publicly, but have been considering doing so and am happy to take questions from curious readers.

If you’re interested in your own DNA test results, you can grab a 23andMe test here on Amazon or directly through 23andMe! (You’ll automatically receive 10% off a kit via the 23andMe link!)
